I am finishing my PhD on transboundary marine protected areas (MPAs), more precisely on how States can cooperate in their implementation and management. I volunteer with the oldest environmental NGO in Portugal (LPN), contributing to the activities of their Oceans Working Group. I am very interested in how science is communicated, especially given the often misguided views people have on MPAs (i.e., that they will work in any situation and will always have fisheries benefits). I think it is important to communicate science accurately but in a way that is understandable by non-especialists. I think this is a critical field if science results are to be translated into effective policy, so I hope to gain better insights into how science can be more influential in policy-making processes.
