I work with developing country partners who conduct action-research with indigenous and local communities in areas of important bio-cultural diversity - my role is to link local findings to international policy such as the Biodiversity Convention. Our focus is on traditional knowledge, genetic resources and bio-cultural heritage - how to protect community rights over them and strengthen them for community subsistence, food security, biodiversity conservation, and resilience/adaptation to climate change.

Last chance to salvage new agreement on genetic resources

Hello all,

This Saturday governments are meeting in Montreal for the final negotiations of an international protocol on access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing (18-21 September). The protocol is due to be adopted at Nagoya in October. But significant areas of disagreement remain, and unless these are resolved, the protocol will make little difference.
