Muhammed Nahar has been actively engaged in the ecotourism / sustainable tourism domain for over a decade. His interest towards Ecotourism got kick started at IIFM, Bhopal where he majored in the area of Natural Resources Management. In his professional journey so far, he has rich consulting experience in the field of ecotourism having worked closely with state governments, international agencies, joint ventures and private ecotourism ventures. He was involved in crafting ecotourism policies and strategies for states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Sikkim. He also managed some of the well known wildlife lodges and nature resorts owned by Jungle Lodges and Resorts Ltd.- a Govt. of Karnataka enterprise. He worked on projects related to Sustainable Tourism master planning and responsible tourism initiatives in Kerala as the Tourism Planner with GITPAC International. As the tourism expert he was part of the GITPAC team which had prepared the Feasibility study for Lake Victoria destination development in Uganda, East Africa. As Tourism Development Expert, he worked with Gujarat Tourism Opportunity Limited, a Joint venture between Govt. of Gujarat and IL&FS, where he looked after tourism projects from its conceptualization and development, project management, tourism projects in PPP format, technical assistance in policy formulation, capacity building, etc. Being the Head-Ecotourism projects, he supervised Techno-economic feasibility assessments for 6 ecotourism resort projects in Gujarat which included activities like site identification, technical assessments, financial viability assessment, Bid document preparation and Bid process management.
Recognized as Global Tourism Expert from India by UNEP in its Database on Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism, he maintains strong interest towards tourism research, conducting capacity building and training programs in the Tourism domain. He has published articles and write-ups in journals and magazines at the national and international level and has participated in various conferences in the field of eco tourism both as Speaker as well as Panelist. He is a member of different national and international tourism associations, groups and research bodies; notably member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group. He has been appointed by GreenDestination /QualityCoast, an international sustainable tourism certification agency as its National representative for India. He has recommended 2 destinations namely – Khangchendzonga National Park, Sikkim and Periyar Tiger Reserve, Kerala in the list of Global 100 Green Destinations.
Currently he is part of two important projects on ecotourism; as National Ecotourism Consultant with JICA assisted Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project and Team Leader and Tourism expert in the World Bank-ICZM Project for developing ecotourism in Marine National Park and Sanctuary, Jamnagar, Gujarat. In the year 2014, he has founded Minla Strategies, a consulting firm positioned as one-stop-shop for sustainable tourism / ecotourism.
