The Federal Government of Nigeria has not shown reasonable commitment in actually cleaning up the Ogoniland in the Niger Delta region in the Southern Nigeria. This was contained in a welcome address by Dr. Godwin Uyi Ojo, Executive Director, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria at the 9th Annual National Environmental Congress organised by ERA/FoEN entitled Natural Resource Governance within the Change Mantra
The congress which is holding at Abuja is 'xraying' natural resource governance in the nation. Ojo recalled that having performed the cleanup demonstration there has been no holistic plan and no funds from the initial $1 billion
Following a United Nations Environment Programmes (UNEP) report on the level of pollution of Ogoniland with hydrocarbons by the oil industry published in August 2011, the government had responded basically to step up action in keeping with the president's vowed commitment to working for the development and well-being of all Nigerians, according to a statement by Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina.
Buhari had during a campaign visit to Ogoniland before the general elections, promised to "solve all the problems associated with oil exploration in the Niger Delta, including the remediation and restoration of Ogoni environment.".Ogoni Cleanup Demonstration
